How to catch burbot in Utah
Flaming Gorge's invasive freshwater cod. Night jigging through the ice with glow lures — and no limit, so keep every one.
Behavior & tendencies
The invader: a freshwater cod illegally introduced to Flaming Gorge, now a must-kill species with no limit. Nocturnal bottom feeders that turn on after dark — and the flesh is legitimately excellent ("poor man's lobster").
Seasonal patterns
Winter through the ice is the fishery — January's Burbot Bash is built around it. They bite from sunset onward, best from dark to midnight, on rocky structure 20–60 feet down.
What they bite
Crayfish, small fish, and anything dead on the bottom.
