Fishing Fish Lake: what to know
Fish Lake sits at 8,800 feet on the Fishlake Plateau in south-central Utah, 5 miles long and 100 feet deep, ringed by aspens that turn gold in September. It's one of the state's oldest fishing destinations, with lodges, campgrounds, and a paved road around most of it. Lake trout (mackinaw) are the trophy species; splake, rainbows, and yellow perch are the everyday fish, and a huge perch population feeds everything else.
Ice fishing is what Fish Lake is famous for — the perch bite through the ice from January to March is the best in the state, and lake trout and splake come through the same holes. Ice-out in May starts the shore season for rainbows and splake. Summer is trolling and deep jigging for macks with perch fishing from the docks for kids. Fall brings the lake trout shallow again in October and November, and the Twin Creeks area fishes well from the bank.
Perch: tiny jigs or ice flies tipped with a perch eye or wax worm, right on bottom in 20–40 feet, everywhere along the west shore. Lake trout: jig heavy tube jigs and spoons in 50–90 feet, or troll big plugs deep; a piece of perch meat helps. Splake and rainbows: worms and PowerBait from shore, or a small spoon trolled shallow. Fish Lake has a lake trout limit with a size restriction on the big ones and encourages keeping the small ones — details in the regulations section below.
