The advisory is for a harmful algal bloom at 13 monitored sites and replaces the fishing rating until it’s lifted — keep dogs out of the water and check habs.utah.gov before you go. The stored pool above the natural lake was 52% full — that's the irrigation storage, not the lake itself, but a drained pool pulls the shallows out of play. Fishing Utah Lake: what to know
Utah Lake is the biggest freshwater lake in the state — 150 square miles, only about nine feet deep, at 4,500 feet with the Wasatch Front along its east shore. It's a warm-water fishery: white bass in huge numbers, walleye, channel catfish that run big, largemouth bass around the harbors, and a carp population the state actively removes to help the endangered June sucker. Access at Utah Lake State Park (Provo), Lindon Harbor, American Fork Harbor, Saratoga Springs, and Lincoln Beach.
The white bass spawn run in April and May — up the Provo and Spanish Fork river mouths and along the shorelines — is a fish-every-cast event. Walleye spawn on the rip-rap in March. Summer is channel catfish, best at night from the harbors and the shore, and largemouth in the reeds; harmful algal blooms are common in hot summers and this page shows the advisory. Fall cools things down and the white bass school up again. Ice fishing for white bass and perch is popular from the harbors in cold winters.
White bass: small jigs, spinners, or a fly with white marabou — anything shiny in the spawn. Walleye: jigs and minnows along the rocks at Lincoln Beach and Provo harbor at night. Catfish: cut bait, chicken liver, or shrimp on the bottom. Bass: spinnerbaits and frogs around the reeds and harbor structure. Keep the walleye limit in mind; carp are unlimited and the lake thanks you.
