Fishing Green River (below Flaming Gorge): what to know
The Green below Flaming Gorge Dam is one of the great trout rivers in America: 7 miles of gin-clear tailwater from the dam to Little Hole (the A section), then B section to Indian Crossing and C section into Browns Park, with fish counts that have topped 14,000 trout per mile. Browns, rainbows, and cutthroat, most in the 14–20 inch class, in red-rock canyon water you can see 20 feet into. Access from the dam and Little Hole, a paved trail the length of A section, and drift boats from either launch — Dutch John has shuttles, guides, and a fly shop.
Because flows are dam-controlled, the Green fishes all year — it's the answer when every freestone is blown out in May. Winter is midges and scuds and empty river. Spring brings blue-winged olives and the fish shallow. Late May into June is the cicada hatch, when big fish eat dry flies on the bank for a few loud weeks; June and July add stoneflies and PMDs. Summer is hoppers and terrestrials through the afternoon and heavy float traffic. September and October are the browns' pre-spawn feed — streamers and quiet water.
Nymphing scuds, midges, and small mayflies under an indicator in the deep runs produces every day of the year; dry-dropper with a foam cicada or hopper in season; streamers on cloudy days for the big browns. The clarity means long leaders, light tippet, and stealthy wading. The Green is artificial flies and lures only with a restrictive trout limit and size rules — most anglers release everything. Regulations
From the Flaming Gorge Dam downriver to the confluence of the Colorado River
- No limit for channel catfish.
- No limit for burbot, northern pike, smallmouth bass or walleye. Anglers may not release any of these fish, which must be immediately killed.
- Species of threatened and endangered fish occur in the Green River. If you catch one of these fish, you must release it immediately. See page 16 for a list of prohibited fish. upstream to Flaming Gorge Dam, including Gorge Creek, a tributary entering the Green River at Little Hole:
- Limit 3 trout (2 under 15 inches and 1 over 22 inches).
- All trout from 15 to 22 inches must be immediately released.
- No limit for burbot, northern pike, smallmouth bass or walleye. Anglers may not release any of these fish, which must be immediately killed.
- Artificial flies and lures only.
- CLOSED to fishing from a boat with a motor between the Utah-Colorado state line and Flaming Gorge Dam.
From the Colorado state line downriver to Sand Wash boat launch
- All roundtail chub must be immediately released.
