How to catch brown trout in Utah

Utah's big-river predator. Browns dominate tailwaters like the Green and the Provo, run big in fall, and reward anglers who fish streamers, low light, and cold weather.

Behavior & tendencies

Browns are ambush predators that own the dark water: undercut banks, log jams, deep seams, tailouts. The big ones feed at night or in low light and eat fish, crayfish, and mice more than insects. They're the wariest trout in the river — one sloppy cast and the pool is done.

Seasonal patterns

Fall is the season: pre-spawn browns get territorial and aggressive from September into November. Winter and early spring fish deep and slow. Summer means early mornings, late evenings, and hopper banks on the Green. Runoff pushes them tight to the banks — great streamer water.

What they bite

Sculpins, minnows, crayfish, big nymphs, terrestrials — and each other. The biggest browns want a meal, not a snack.
