Utah fishing in November

Last open-water push, first ice up high.

November is quiet and excellent. Stocking tapers to the last fall plants, the crowds are gone, and open-water fishing stays strong at low elevation right up until freeze-up — Deer Creek, Jordanelle, Yuba, and the southern reservoirs fish well from the bank, and the tailwaters are in fine winter form. High reservoirs like Strawberry and Scofield start skimming ice, usually capping fully by month's end or early December. Mountain whitefish spawn in the rivers, and the Bear Lake cutthroat move shallow as the water cools.

• Midday is the window — water temps peak around 2 PM and so does the bite.
• Whitefish stack in tailouts on the Provo and Weber; a small bead-head nymph fished deep catches dozens.
