What each month looks like on Utah’s water — seasonal patterns, where the DWR historically stocks (bars show share of the year’s plants), typical flows, and the species in season.

• January — Deep winter: ice fishing peaks, tailwaters keep flowing
• February — Best ice of the year, and the first stocking trucks roll south
• March — Ice-out begins, stocking ramps, low-elevation waters wake up
• April — Pre-runoff prime time and the biggest stocking month so far
• May — Runoff on the rivers, everything else is on fire
• June — Peak stocking, the high lakes open, rivers clear late
• July — High country season, early mornings on the reservoirs
• Augustnow — Hot low water, cool high lakes, and the monsoon
• September — Fall stocking begins, cooling water brings trout back shallow
• October — Brown trout spawn, fall stocking peaks, big fish on the bank
• November — Last open-water push, first ice up high
• December — Ice-up, early ice, and winter tailwaters
