Utah fishing in June

Peak stocking, the high lakes open, rivers clear late.

June is the biggest stocking month of the year by a wide margin — the DWR plants roughly six hundred different waters, including the aerial plants into the Uinta and Boulder Mountain high lakes as they lose their ice. Runoff peaks and then drops fast on most rivers; by the last week the Weber, Provo, and Logan are typically dropping toward fishable and the big stonefly and green drake hatches start. Reservoirs are at their fullest, water temps hit the low 60s, and every species is active. It's the month Utah fishing has the most options.

High lakes as they open (Mirror Lake Highway lakes first, then the backcountry), Strawberry and Scofield at their best, Flaming Gorge for kokanee and lake trout, the Green for cicadas, Lake Powell for stripers boiling.

June tips

• Newly ice-free high lakes fish best in the first two weeks — cruising trout in the shallows eat almost any dry fly.
• Watch a river's 72-hour chart: once it drops below the seasonal median and clears, the post-runoff bite is the year's best.
• Green drakes on the Provo and Weber late in the month — size 10–12 dries in the evening.
