Fishing Middle Provo River: what to know
The Middle Provo runs 12 miles from Jordanelle Dam through the Heber Valley to Deer Creek Reservoir, a rebuilt, re-meandered tailwater that holds several thousand brown trout per mile plus rainbows and whitefish. It's the closest world-class river to Salt Lake — 45 minutes — with public access along River Road, at Legacy Bridge, the Provo River Restoration Project lots, and the Midway and Charleston bridges. Wading is easy; the water is cold and clear year-round.
Midges and blue-winged olives carry the winter and early spring, with the March–April BWO hatch bringing rising fish on cloudy afternoons. Runoff barely touches it because the dam controls the flow. June through July is the best dry-fly fishing — PMDs and green drakes in the evenings — and late summer is caddis and hoppers. Fall belongs to the browns: aggressive, streamer-eating fish from September into the November spawn. It's fishable every month.
Nymphing sowbugs, small mayfly and midge nymphs, and San Juan worms under an indicator in the runs and along the undercut banks is the bread and butter; match the hatch on top when they're up; swing or strip streamers in fall. The Middle Provo is flies and lures only with a two-fish limit, and the tributary mouths close during spawning — check the regulations section below.
