Fishing Logan River: what to know

The Logan River drops out of the Bear River Range through Logan Canyon along US-89 — 30 miles of pocket water, riffles, and beaver ponds from the Idaho line to the valley, with pull-offs and Forest Service campgrounds the whole way. It's a native Bonneville cutthroat stronghold in the upper canyon, with browns and whitefish lower down, and a beautiful, small-water freestone.

Runoff blows it out from late April into June; the window is March–April at winter flows and then late June through October once it clears. Summer is classic dry-fly water — caddis, PMDs, and attractors — and September is the best month, with cutthroat eating dries in the upper canyon and browns feeding low.

A short rod, a dry-dropper, and a lot of walking. Attractor dries (Stimulators, Royal Wulffs) with a small beadhead nymph below; small streamers in the deeper pools for browns. Parts of the Logan have special cutthroat regulations — reduced limits or catch-and-release, flies and lures only — that change by section; the regulations section below has the current rules.

Best time to fish Logan River

The DWR has stocked Logan River 152 times over the last 6 seasons, and 64% of those plants landed in June through August — the freshest fish and the easiest bite usually follow within a week or two of a stocking. Flows typically peak in June (about 498 cfs median) and settle to their lowest in February (about 98 cfs) — the wadeable, clear-water window usually opens once flows drop below the seasonal median, and the 72-hour chart above shows where today sits against it.
