How to catch brook trout in Utah

The high-country classic. Brookies thrive in Uinta and Boulder Mountain lakes — small water, aggressive fish, spectacular fall colors.

Behavior & tendencies

Brookies are aggressive, short-lived char that overpopulate small water — which makes them perfect for fast fishing. In the Uintas and on Boulder Mountain they hit anything that moves, and the fall spawn turns males into the most beautiful fish in Utah.

Seasonal patterns

July through September is the high-lake season once the trails melt out. Fall is peak: spawning colors, shallow aggressive fish. They also bite well through the ice for anyone willing to walk in.

What they bite

Any insect, any small fish, anything shiny. Brook trout are rarely selective.
