Quick tactics for brook trout

Brookies are aggressive, short-lived char that overpopulate small water — which makes them perfect for fast fishing. In the Uintas and on Boulder Mountain they hit anything that moves, and the fall spawn turns males into the most beautiful fish in Utah.

Any insect, any small fish, anything shiny. Brook trout are rarely selective.

• Small attractor dries — almost any pattern works
• Tiny spinners (size 0–1) on ultralight spin gear
• Small leech or damsel patterns on lakes
• Ice jigs tipped with wax worms in winter
