How to catch black crappie in Utah
Slabs on light jigs around structure at Willard Bay, Pineview, and Quail Creek. Spring spawn is the peak window.
Behavior & tendencies
Structure-schooling panfish with paper mouths and a taste for minnows. Find one crappie and you've found fifty — they stack on submerged brush, weed edges, and marina slips at Willard, Pineview, and Quail Creek.
Seasonal patterns
The spring spawn (April–May) brings them shallow to brush and reeds — the classic bobber bite. Summer schools suspend off deeper structure. Ice season concentrates them in predictable basins; night fishing under lights works year-round.
What they bite
Small minnows and zooplankton; they strike small jigs as both.
